Find good value holidays in the country in cottages and log cabins

High quality self catering acommodation and comfortable beds.

Self catering cottage accommodation is good value:

When you're out in the deep countryside with no local shops, there aren't the opportunities to go shopping for the sake of shopping. A country holiday is a very different affair centred on the good things that nature provides for free.

Renting a country cottage or log cabin will be your biggest cost. If you're self catering, you buy food in as your would normally at home. Most people stop off at a local supermarket as they near their accommodation or arrive first, settle in, then make a trip to the supermarket to stock up. After that you're as free as a bird. You can spend money going out for meals at country pubs and restaurants in town if you wish or cook back at your holiday home if you prefer.

walking in the countrysideWalking in the countryside in Britain is free, even in British national parks. Anyone planning a day trip into the hills would take a picnic anyway. You also have the option of taking a flask with you for hot drinks or soft drinks in cartons or cans. There is a trade-off between having to carry stuff and spending money at eateries. If everyone is equipped with their own small backpack, carrying is not a problem.

It is sometimes possible to borrow bicycles at self catering accommodation that eliminates the cost of hire should you wish to try cycling. It is worth searching for the right country cottage to rent that offers the extras that would make your holiday better value. Some locations offer free use of canoes, bikes, fishing rods, dinghies and other equipment.

Obviously visiting tourist attractions will raise the cost but you don't have to visit these places if you prefer not to spend the money. There is just so much free stuff to see in Britain that does not cost a penny. In fact, if you want to keep costs to a minimum, holiday in the more remote places in Britain where the people are few and commercial visitor attractions fewer.

A coastal location is ideal for best value self catering holidays because as well as forays into the countryside you can enjoy days on the beach, digging in the sand, paddling and playing in sand dunes. All this will keep children happy and as long as you stay away from large seaside resorts and head for unspoiled simple beaches, your costs will be minimal. The advice here is to head for Wales or Scotland, although the cost of getting there also needs to be balanced.

Best value cottage breaks can be obtained by scouring the last minute cottage pages and cottage special offers. Special offers can even be obtained in the height of summer because holidays are occasionally cancelled because of illness or work requirements and cottage owners reduce the price to compensate for that booking.

The other less expensive periods for bookings cottages are mid week breaks. This is especially true of larger cottages which tend to be a weekend market leaving mid week periods unbooked. These mid-week periods are reduced to make them more attractive and are ideal for the retired who can holiday whenever they wish and easily book the very cheapest periods.

Self-catering tends to become better value with increasing occupancy. Rent a big country house as group accommodation for the lowest amount per head.
